Yan Burelle, Ph.D.
After completing my PhD in exercise physiology at the Université de Montréal, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Peter Hochachka's lab at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. I trained in the field of mitochondrial bioenergetics with a focus on understanding the mechanisms regulating energy production and shuttling in muscle cells. As an independent investigator, I developed a lab in which we integrate multiple facets of mitochondrial biology to gain a better understanding of their role in tissue plasticity and disease development.

After spending more than a decade at the Université de Montréal, I established my laboratory at the University of Ottawa were I am Full Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences with a cross appointment in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine. I am also the holder of the University Research Chair in Integrative Mitochondrial Biology.

Over the years I had the great pleasure and honour to train several graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, who have now become investigators of their own, or occupy enviable positions in the public sector or industry. I thrive to provide a rich and stimulating environment where students can develop their skills, autonomy, and leadership while making exciting new discoveries.
